Do I need to use a preamp with my turntable?

What is a Phono Preamp?

As vinyl records have a very quiet output signal, a phono preamplifier is needed to boost the turntable’s output level for receiving audio players and active speakers to process as normal.

Without a preamp, your vinyl will be barely audible and will lack bass and treble.

Does My Turntable Need a Preamp?

If you’re using your turntable with either a standalone active speaker or an audio system like Sonos or Bluesound, you will need an external preamp in place.

However, many modern turntables come equipped with their own (sometimes switchable) preamp. If switchable his can be turned on or off if your receiving equipment already features a preamp stage.

Many classic turntables made until the mid-1990s tend not to feature an internal preamp, so an external preamp is needed before connecting to your chosen audio system.

Most turntables at SHS feature internal switchable preamps, except for the Rega Planar 1, Rega Planar 2 and Audio-Technica AT-LP140XP.

Which External Preamp Do I Use?

If you need to use an external preamp, the good news is most options on the market all perform the same function. Having said that, a higher qaulity pre-amp will provide an improved sound.

At SHS we stock and supply the following models because of their sound quality and ease of use:

  • Behringer PP400 - Entry level with good quality sound
  • Rega Mini Fono A2D - Premium preamp with greater sound quality and USB connectivity
  • Pro-Ject Phono Box MM/MC - Utilising specially selected low-noise, ICs and dual-mono circuitry, the Pro-Ject Phono Box enhances music quality while reducing background noise.

Connecting a Phono Preamp

If you need an external preamp to link the output of your turntable to the input of your chosen audio system, here’s how it connects and fits into place:

1

Connect the turntable’s output leads (red & white/black) to the inputs of the preamp.

2

Use further RCA cables from the preamp’s output to the  input of your audio system.*

3

Turn on the turntable, preamp and active speaker system to test it’s working.

4

If using with a Sonos or Bluesound product, activate the  line-in function in the system’s app.

* When using an active speaker with a 3.5mm input, use an RCA to 3.5mm connector instead.
