Does Sonos work with a projector?
🎥 Using Sonos with a Projector
Want to enjoy big-screen cinema vibes at home with your projector and get amazing Sonos sound? Good news — it’s absolutely possible! You’ll just need to make sure your projector and Sonos are connected in the right way.
This guide walks you through the options depending on what kind of projector you have.
âś… Does Sonos Work with a Projector?
Yes! Though you may need a little extra wiring compared to a standard TV setup - you can use a projector with any of these Sonos home cinema products:
- Sonos Beam (Gen 1 & Gen 2)
- Sonos Arc / Sonos Arc Ultra
- Sonos Amp
Depending on your projector, you might need an extra device or two, but we’ll explain the easiest ways to get set up.
🔌 If Your Projector Has HDMI-ARC/eARC
This is the simplest option.
If your projector comes with an HDMI-ARC or HDMI-eARC port (like the Samsung Premiere LSP7T), you can plug it directly into your Sonos Beam, Arc, or Amp.
What’s HDMI-ARC/eARC?
- It’s a special type of HDMI connection that sends audio back out from your projector to your soundbar or amp.
- Regular HDMI ports don’t do this — they only send video in.

🔄 If Your Projector Doesn’t Have HDMI-ARC/eARC
No ARC port? No problem. Most projectors only have standard HDMI inputs (video only), which means they can’t send sound back to your Sonos directly.
Here are your options:
1. Use an HDMI Matrix/Splitter (Best Option)
- Your video source (like a streaming stick, Blu-ray player, or games console) plugs into the splitter.
- The splitter sends the video to your projector and the audio to your Sonos Beam, Arc, or Amp.
- ⚠️ Important: Make sure your HDMI splitter specifically supports ARC or eARC passthrough. Without this, the audio won’t route correctly to your Sonos.
- When done right, this keeps everything in sync and lets you unlock the full sound quality your Sonos system can deliver (including Dolby Atmos on supported models).
2. Use an Optical Connection (Alternative Option)
Some projectors have an optical audio output instead. In that case, you can use a HDMI-to-Optical adapter with your Sonos soundbar or Amp.
⚠️ The catch: Optical doesn’t have the same bandwidth as HDMI-ARC/eARC, so while it will still sound great, you’ll miss out on premium formats like Dolby Atmos.

âť“ Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I connect a Sonos Beam Gen 2 or Sonos Arc Ultra to a projector with Bluetooth?
A: The Sonos Beam Gen 2 doesn’t have Bluetooth, so it can’t connect to a projector this way.
The Sonos Arc Ultra, however, does support Bluetooth — as do several other Sonos speakers including:
- Sonos Move / Move 2
- Sonos Roam / Roam 2
- Sonos Era 100
- Sonos Era 300
As long as your projector’s Bluetooth profiles are compatible with your projector, these models can connect wirelessly. Read more about Bluetooth compatibility here 👉 [link]
Q: Can I connect Sonos to a projector using a 3.5mm headphone jack?
A: No — Sonos soundbar and Sonos Amp don’t have a 3.5mm input. If your projector only has a headphone output, you’ll need to use a different method such as HDMI ARC/eARC, HDMI splitter, optical out or bluetooth.
Q: How do I connect Sonos Arc or Beam to a projector with HDMI but no HDMI ARC?
A: If your projector doesn’t have HDMI ARC or eARC, the best method is to use an HDMI splitter that supports ARC/eARC passthrough. This splits the signal so video goes to your projector and audio goes to your Sonos. Some projectors also have an optical output, which you can connect to Sonos using an HDMI-to-optical adapter (though you won’t get Dolby Atmos).
Q: Will Sonos work with projectors that only have VGA or USB?
A: No — VGA and USB connections don’t carry audio in a way that works with Sonos soundbars or Amp. Stick to HDMI ARC/eARC, a compatible HDMI splitter, Bluetooth or an optical connection.
Q: Does using Sonos with a projector cause lip-sync or audio delay?
A: If you connect with HDMI ARC/eARC or a proper HDMI splitter, your sound and picture should stay in sync. Optical connections work too.
