Why is Motion important?

Whether you're into high-octane movies, sports or gaming you won't want to suffer from judder or stuttering. Particularly in faster-paced scenes or action-filled segments, TVs that don't have a good grasp of Motion may blur or lag so that the quality of the image deteriorates and you lose the sharpness of the scene.

Important Motion-related Terms

Refresh Rate:

Refresh Rate is the speed at which the image on-screen changes from one picture to the next - and the higher the Refresh Rate the smoother the image appears on the screen.

Frames Per Second (FPS):

Related to refresh rate, Frames per second is just what it says on the tin. The higher number of frames per second your TV is able to display, the less juddering or stuttering there will be between frames to offer a smoother overall picture.

Frame insertion:

The Processor on some TVs is clever enough to insert additional frames or light panels into the sequence you're watching. This will smooth out any lag or stuttering between frames, to again make the motion crystal clear.

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR):

Unlike movies and TV shows that have a fixed refresh speed, video games that are controlled by the person playing them tend to have a variable refresh speed. TVs that are able to vary their refresh speed will perform better for gaming as this will reduce lag.

Examples of Sony Motion technology:

MotionFlow XR - This technology inserts extra frames and controls the backlight to make action movies, sports, and games look smoother and clearer. The use of image blur reduction means less blur, more wow! This is a feature within the picture settings that can be adjusted/enabled or disabled. This technology could up your frames per second from 50Hz all the way up to 480Hz.

Top Tip: Find the different Motionflow modes by pressing Home on your BRAVIA remote control and selecting Action Menu>Picture>Advanced Settings>Motion>Motionflow>type of Motionflow effect.

X-Motion Clarity (Also known as XR-Motion clarity) - The evolution of MotionFlow XR. Keeping everything smooth, bright and clear! X-Motion Clarity solves blur in fast scenes without losing virtually any brightness. However unlike MotionFlow XR this feature is built into the processor to enhance the content.

XR OLED Motion - Built into the Cognitive XR Processor, this super cool motion technolgy spots key objects in each frame and compares them to the next frame to see how they move. It then creates new frames in between, making the movement smoother.
