Can you still buy the Sonos One / Sonos One SL? What's the new equivalent?
The need to knows:
Sonos has discontinued the popular Sonos One (Gen 2) and Sonos One SL speakers. Existing speakers will continue to function normally & will still be supported for bug updates, but won't receive new features. As a replacement, Sonos introduces the Sonos Era 100, their new entry-level smart speaker.
Key Differences:
- Sound: Era 100 offers richer, fuller sound with stereo separation thanks to two angled tweeters and a larger woofer. Sonos One has mono sound, good for casual listening but lower fidelity.
- Features: Era 100 boasts Bluetooth 5.0, line-in for wired devices, Quick Tuning for Android, Trueplay for iOS (room calibration), and voice assistance (except Google Assistant). Sonos One has no Bluetooth or line-in, Trueplay for iOS only, and full voice assistance (Sonos One SL lacks voice control).
- Design: Era 100 features a new, sleek cylindrical design matching other new Sonos releases. Sonos One has a slightly outdated design.
Price: Era 100 is more expensive (£249) than Sonos One (Gen 2, £199) and Sonos One SL (£179), but offers better performance and features.
Should you upgrade?
If you have a Sonos One (Gen 2) and are happy with it, you don't need to upgrade. However, if you want better sound, more features, and a modern design, the Era 100 is a worthwhile upgrade. If you're new to Sonos, the Era 100 is a great starting point.
Alternatives:
- Sonos Era 300: A premium option with Dolby Atmos and spatial audio for £449.
- Sonos One (Gen 2) / Sonos One SL: Still available while stocks last.
