I'm experiencing a humming sound with my turntable?

A turntable hum can be annoying, but it's often caused by fairly simple grounding issues. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot the hum:

Grounding:

  1. Check the Ground Cable: Most turntables (not Rega) have a grounding cable, usually a bare wire with a lug on the end. Make sure it's securely connected to the grounding post on both the turntable and your amplifier (not seen on Smart Amplifiers like the Sonos Amp) or receiver. Look for a screw terminal marked "ground".
  2. If no grounding terminal is available: you can try a ground loop isolator to try and remove the buzzing from the audio signal (connects to RCA cables from the turntable).
  3. Clean Connections: Loose or corroded connections can also cause hum. Disconnect and reconnect all the cables between your turntable, amplifier/receiver, and speakers. Use a q-tip with rubbing alcohol to clean any grime from the connectors before reconnecting them.

External Interference:

  1. Isolate the Turntable: Move your turntable away from your speakers and other electronics. Sometimes, electrical interference from nearby devices can cause hum. You may need to try the speakers on a different surface to the turntable.
  2. Try a Different Outlet: Plug your turntable directly into a wall outlet, bypassing any surge protectors or power strips. See if the hum goes away.
  3. Different Room Test: If possible, set up your turntable in another room to see if the hum persists. This can help identify if there's electrical interference in your listening space.

Other Checks:

  • RCA Cables: Try using a different set of RCA cables to connect your turntable to your amplifier/receiver. Faulty cables can sometimes cause hum.
  • Turn Down Volume Knob: Make sure your volume knob isn't cranked all the way up. Hum can sometimes become more noticeable at higher volumes.

We hope this helps!
